Because I grew up next to the ocean, I don't find it interesting. Shock! Horror!

People can't understand this about me. Sure, the ocean I grew up by was always cold and gray and rainy, and the one I live by now is sunny and warm. But it's just not something I think about or look forward to visiting all the time. Then..... I went on this hike by Point Dume in Malibu and it was just inescapably lovely. It may have almost changed my mind about the beach. Just maybe. I'll think about it.

Waiting For Inspiration...

Hello.

You may have noticed the sparse posting around here lately. There is a reason for it, but not a very exciting one. I just haven't been feeling inspired. I've been keeping it pretty low key lately, working a lot, so that means I have to cut back on my other fun things, like going out, or shopping, or cooking. As a self-diagnosed introvert (read this fascinating article here) I find my life works smoothest when I'm not doing too much and overextending myself with activities.

Unfortunately for you, my dear reader, that means less to write about here. I suppose I could recycle things that I think are cute from other sites, but I'd like to try and keep my content a little more original, so I hope you don't mind if I just wait a few days for inspiration or energy to strike.

There is one thing I would like to mention. Remember how I don't drink coffee very often? Well, I may have just found a new reason to start drinking it pretty regularly. It's called a dirty horchata (espresso+horchata) and you get it at a cute little restaurant called Tinga on La Brea. It's one of the very yummiest things I have ever tasted. Plus it gets me all hopped up on caffeine and makes me want to run around and do fun things that I can then share with you! It's a win-win.

Hedi Slimane/California Song

I finally made it to the Hedi Slimane photography exhibit at MOCA at the Pacific Design Center yesterday and it was so good. The exhibit focuses on images that he took here in California starting in 2007, but I found the photos to be rather timeless, some look like they could have been taken anywhere between 1960 and now.

The exhibit is pretty small and won't take you much time, I think I spent 30 minutes there tops, but it's worth checking out. There are 2 floors, the first is prints of his work, and then on the second floor-the best thing ever- they have a giant cube set up and project his photos onto it. All the while this cozy ambient music is playing and it's really dark. It's kind of like being in the most creative womb ever and it makes you just want to move in, cozy into a soft bed and live there forever. It's fantastic.

But I will tell you what I am obsessed with- the iPhone case. Now that is one topic I can get behind. I always judge a book by it's cover dontcha know? These are three styles I fell in love with.

Holiday Bark

Remember those rosemary roasted cashews from the last post?

Well, I took them and made amazing-out of this world-crunchy-salty-sweet-spicy chocolate bark!

I guess I have Trader Joe's to thank, because when I went there yesterday they were completely out of pistachios that I needed to make the white chocolate bark I was planning. I was super annoyed at the time, but after tasting this yummy treat I couldn't be happier.

So what I did was, make the rosemary roasted cashews, but leave out the salt. Melt some chocolate, spread it on some foil or parchment paper, sprinkle over the cashews, and then take some fleur de sel and liberally sprinkle that over everything. Let the chocolate set and then break into large irregular chunks. Oh my goodness. It tastes soooo good.

I made some white chocolate bark too, with dried cranberries and apricots. Too bad it's being totally eclipsed by this amazing chocolate bark!

Ina Garten's Rosemary Roasted Cashews

Have you ever tried these? If you haven't you need to do yourself a favor. Put down the laptop, drive to the grocery store, buy the ingredients below and make these rosemary roasted cashews. Unless you don't want to eat a whole pound of cashews by yourself and hissing at anyone that tries to take some.

They make a great last minute foodie Christmas gift as well!

1 pound roasted unsalted cashews

2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary leaves

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 teaspoons light brown sugar

1 tablespoon kosher salt

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175°C).

2. Spread the cashews out on a sheet pan. Toast in the oven until warm, about 5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl, combine the rosemary, cayenne, sugar, salt, and butter. Thoroughly toss the warm cashews with the spiced butter and serve warm.

Hair Inspiration

This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me, but the above photo is what I am going to cut my hair like very soon. For the last 10 years or so this is pretty much the haircut I have had, with a few variations here and there. I have been trying to grow my hair out but was reminded, as I am every time I do this, that it's not a good look for me. I hate it. So, back to the classic bob!

Do you ever read Eva Chen's blog? She's the beauty editor at Teen Vogue and so she knows all about every beauty product and she sees all the good fashion shows and basically I am just jealous of her fabulous jet setting lifestyle. Anyway she's always answering people's beauty questions and I had one about hairbrushes recently and she was kind enough to give me some advice!

I'm planning on heading to Target later to check out those Sonia Kashuk brushes. Unfortunately I don't have a frappucino or coffee habit to cut back on, so that coveted Mason Pearson won't be appearing anywhere in my future anytime soon!

DIY Painted Clutch

I've been seeing all these great hand painted clutches here, here, and here on the internet and was very curious to try it myself. Most people have been using the American Apparel clutches for this, but at $50 I was a little concerned that I would be spending too much money on something I didn't totally love. I finally managed to find a clutch I liked on sale for under $20 and we were in business.

At the craft store, I purchased:

1. Painter's tape

2. A sponge brush

3. Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint

I used a ruler and pen to measure and mark the area I wanted to paint, roughly the lower third of the bag. Then I applied the painter's tape around all four sides of the area I wanted to paint. Make sure to really press down on the tape, you don't want any paint sneaking in under there!

Then I painted and let dry between each coat. I think I did 8 coats. It took a lot of paint to cover up the pattern on this bag! Then I peeled off the tape and viola- this adorable clutch!

Here it is in action! I love love love it.

I "made" some Christmas ornaments today. By "made" I mean I bought plain wooden ornaments and drew on them with my favorite thing ever- the Sharpie paint pen! Have you tried these pens? SO amazing. You can use them on just about every material. Ever since I got one I have been drawing on everything!

I think I will make a bunch of these and use them as a wrapping accessory on Christmas gifts.

Revlon has really been hitting it out of the park lately with their nail polishes! Every time I go to the drugstore I see another color I just have to own.

I especially love Starry Pink, the one on the right, it has turned out to be the perfect everyday neutral with just a little bit of sparkle. One tip for you- apply two coats to get just the right coverage, it will look so feminine and pretty.

Fun Fact- Diana Vreeland claims to have invented modern fast drying nail polish and that Charles Revson, owner of Revlon, stole the formula from her. She said that every time she met him there was a certain embarrassed look in his eye because he knew what he had done and felt somewhat ashamed. Isn't that fascinating?

Looks yummers, right? I have been wanting to make a fall-tinged drink with Applejack ever since I read a recipe for one in Bon Appetit about 3 years ago.
Then I was at Big Bar at Alcove with Lauren the other day and I saw a drink featuring it on the menu. From what I could remember of the original recipe, it seemed quite similar.
Well, one sip of this drink was enough for me to run to the nearest BevMo and buy a bottle of Laird's Apple Jack. And enough Benedictine and St. Germain to make my new signature fall beverage all winter!

The Widow's Touch

1 cup ice cubes
5 Tbsp Laird's Apple Jack
3 Tbsp St. Germain
1 Tbsp Benedictine liqueur
2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Place ice cubes in cocktail shaker. Add remaining ingredients and stir 20 to 30 seconds.
Strain into 2 chilled coupe glasses and serve.

When I was younger, I was bored a LOT. It's the combination of growing up in a small town and not owning a television. One of the games I would play to occupy myself was called "If I Lived Here, How Would I Decorate?". If I found myself in a boring situation, I would mentally redecorate my surroundings. I still do it to this day, just not as often. Probably because there is usually a TV around to distract me!

These days if I was playing the game (and if I won the lottery and was able to buy my fantasy mid-century modern home), these Anthropologie A.P.C. quilts would be on all the beds. They are the perfect combination of traditional home and cutting edge cool. A.P.C. makes the chic-est clothes out there and they used old clothes and scraps from the line to make these. SUCH a good idea!

What's For Dinner?

Lentil, Butternut Squash, Apple, and Curry Soup!

I was going to make a simple butternut squash soup, but I was more in the mood for a hearty

almost- stew, so I searched my fridge and pantry for some inspiration. This is what I came up with:

Ingredients:

1 cup lentils

1 can Trader Joe's diced tomatoes

1 quart chicken stock

2 cups water

1 package Trader Joe's butternut squash

1 green apple, diced

3 small carrots, diced

3 stalks celery, diced

1 onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

3/4 tbsp curry powder

1 sprig fresh thyme

1 bay leaf

2 tbsp olive oil

salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Heat olive oil in large pot on medium high heat. Add onions and saute until translucent. Add carrots, celery, squash, and apple, salt & pepper and cook for 8-10 minutes. Add garlic and curry powder and cook for 2 minutes.

Add tomatoes, lentils, and herbs to pot. Cover with lid, reduce heat to medium and cook for 10 minutes. Remove lid, add stock and water to pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook soup for 1 hour or until vegetables and lentils are tender, adding water if needed.

Blend 3 cups of soup in blender, then return to pot to thicken soup. Stir in balsamic vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

This Nails Inc. magnetic nail polish is amazing. The polish itself contains magnetic particles, after you apply it you wave the magnet that's on the top of the polish bottle over the nail and it creates these wavy 3-D images. What? Yes, it's true. The future is now. You can watch this video to get a better idea of what I'm yammering on about. Sold at Sephora. It's $16.00 but I think it's worth it!

Crafty Season

I went to Michael's Crafts yesterday- literally my favorite thing ever, ever is going to a craft store. I had so much fun wandering around and remembering all these things I needed to buy and discovering new things I didn't know I needed. Did you know that Martha Stewart sells a specific cloth for cleaning up glitter? Genius.

So you may have noticed that fall -and the holidays- are upon us. This is the season for being extra crafty in my opinion. Making fun things for decorating your home, and then making x-mas gifts when you realize you have no money to buy any! Haha.

So far the things I am excited about are Sharpie Paint Pens- I want to try this project with them. And my crafty guru Polly has brought puff paint back into my life in the best way imaginable- these pumpkin decorating ideas are amazing!

Cross Stitch Necklaces

California Cactus Center

I visited the California Cactus Center in Pasadena the other day and it was mind blowingly awesome.

It was fun seeing things I had never seen before. Cacti and succulents are such slow growing plants, in direct contrast to the instant gratification I usually prefer. I'm not sure why I'm drawn to them so much. I think they represent sun and good weather to me.

If you are in the area you should definitely check it out!

X Stitch

There is the cutest cross stitch story in this month's Martha Stewart Living magazine!

It's about creating a family portrait using graph paper and counted cross stitch material, and is geared toward being easy enough for children. I did cross stitch for Christmas presents when I was a kid and it was pretty easy so I think this would be a great idea for a family project.

I just love seeing my favorite craft featured in one of my favorite magazines!

What's For Dinner?

Chicken Enchilada Casserole

I have to admit I have a soft spot for casseroles, they are so comforting. I also love Mexican food, so this recipe in the latest issue of Everyday Food caught my eye immediately. It was very easy to put together and the best part is that every serving has only 300 calories! Yay!

Ingredients:

2 pounds tomatillos, husks removed & coarsely chopped (I used a large jar of green enchilada sauce)

2 tbsp vegetable oil (I used olive oil)

1 white onion, diced small

2 small jalapenos, seeded & diced small

3 garlic cloves, minced

salt & pepper

12 corn tortillas

3/4 pound cooked & shredded chicken (I used a rotisserie chicken)

3 tbsp sour cream

1/2 cup cotija cheese

1/3 cup chopped cilantro

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a blender, puree tomatillos until smooth. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high. Add onion and jalapenos and cook until softened, about 8 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add tomatillo puree and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until sauce is thickened slightly, about 10 minutes. Season with salt & pepper.

2. Briefly run stack of tortillas under cold water, turning to lightly dampen. Wrap stack in a clean kitchen towel and microwave until pliable, about 30 seconds. Fill each tortilla with about 3 tbsp chicken, fold in half, and arrange in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish, overlapping slightly. Top with tomatillo mixture, cover with foil, and bake until bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together sour cream and 2 tbsp water. To serve, drizzle casserole with sour cream mixture and sprinkle with cotija cheese and cilantro.

Ikea Hack

Recently I've been helping my friend Rachel decorate her new place and she found the most amazing bed frame. Don't you just love it? It's that perfect mix of modern (headboard-only platform bed) and vintage (cast iron antique wheels). It's also kind of spendy- $600.

Before she spent that kind of money, I wanted to see if there was anything out there that we could cobble together ourselves. This is what I found:

The bed frame is from Ikea of course, and costs $150. It doesn't have a headboard but you could make one if you had some power tools.

The wheels I found online (could probably also find at a flea market) and depending on the size and weight requirements cost between $14-$20. With shipping and additional hardware you could bring this project in for under $300. That's half the price of the original! I'm definitely keeping this idea in mind for the next time I move into a new place.

Perfect Winter Shoe

The biggest difference between my old life in Portland and my new one here in LA is the weather. It's so much nicer here but it still gets a little bit chilly and it rains sometimes. So I do need one pair of sturdy closed toe shoes for this season. I was thinking oxfords but I couldn't really find a pair that I totally loved, they all seemed so manly. Then my friend Lauren sent me a link to these and I totally fell in LOVE. The color is perfect, it will match everything. They are Borns, so- totally comfortable. But the best part is the ultra girly black velvet laces! The perfect compromise between a fashionable shoe and an everyday stalwart. Buy them here.

They are so cute! I'm almost feeling the urge to name them.

A Conversation With Adam Scott & Jane Lynch

I know it's hard to tell but that is Adam Scott on the left and Jane Lynch on the right. Either they are such huge famous stars that they glow and you can't look directly at them, or I have a crappy old iPhone camera that I use to take pictures of things from far away.

I love "conversations", when they take two famous people and make them talk to each other and we all buy tickets to see it. It's so civilized don't you think?

I have to admit my big draw for this event was Sir Adam Scott, who was adorable on Party Down and continues to be adorable on Parks & Recreation, but I ended up enjoying the heck out of Jane Lynch too. Strangely enough, her most popular role to date of Sue Sylvester on Glee is my least favorite thing I have ever seen her do, but that's okay. Lots of other people like it. She talked a lot about her book and now I want to read it, it sounds really good. My favorite part of the evening was when she talked about how her whole life she tried to live by the rules and how mad she gets when others don't. Tina Fey talks about this too. Oh ladies, can I ever relate. That pretty much sums up my life. Wasted on getting angry about other people not following the rules like I always do. I recently read an article about the financial structure of Germany in Vanity Fair. The author took great pains to point out that everyone follows the rules there. When driving down a crowded freeway, everyone stays in their lane with the slower trucks on the right, no one is trying to constantly change lanes so they can get wherever a little faster and everyone uses their signals. I swear to you, I almost applied for a visa and started packing my bags. That sounds like heaven to me! Do you know what I mean? Anyway my goal in life is to stop getting so mad about it and learn to let go a little bit. I think it just takes time and growing older.

PS- I also got confirmation that the Party Down movie is happening! To be filmed next summer. I can't wait!

Design Sponge Party

I went to the Design Sponge book signing party at Anthropologie in Beverly Hills last night. I was so excited to take lots of pictures and share them all with you... and then-

I had to work all day with lots of unbelievably needy women and was super tired and sarcastic by the time I got to the party.

I was carrying around the beautiful but incredibly heavy Design Sponge book all night so while juggling that with my medium sized clutch and a glass of champagne it made it hard to take pictures.

Said glass of champagne made me not care about taking pictures like, at all.

I was at Anthropologie + I am easily distracted= no good pictures.

Anyway, it was a fun party and it was nice to get dressed up and I got to hang out with my friend Lauren all night. Grace, the author, was very nice and joked around with us while signing our books. We spotted some local LA bloggers but were too shy to say hi. Then we went across the street and drank a bunch of sangria. Here's a picture of that! I obviously have my priorities straight.

Things I did this weekend:

1. Worked 3 super long days in a row. Too many!

2. Accidentally very lightly scraped a car bumper in the Trader Joe's parking lot. I left my number and no one called me (thank you kind person who realized it wasn't a big deal!) but was mortified by an old man who appeared out of nowhere with a camera and snapped pictures of the whole ordeal just in case "I had left a fake phone number". Stupid old pot stirring man with no life.

3. Made an early morning trip to the ER, thankfully not for me, and all is well.

4. Joined a comedy writing/improv group. I have always wanted to try my hand at comedy writing so I guess we will see if I can actually do it. Everyone else in the group is an old pro at improv and I told them all about my deathly fear of the stage (absolutely true) and they were all really nice about it and said I could just write. Thanks guys!

5. Found time at work to take Instagram photos of myself wearing fierce pointy earrings. See above.

I did the Instagram update a few days ago but it didn't change anything. I don't know if my phone is just too old to support the new app? I read on poco-cocoa that if you hate the new Instagram (and it seems like everyone does) you can delete it and reload from the old version saved on your computer. Genius!

According to several fashion magazines and Huffington Post articles, the hat is the new "must have" accessory for ladies this season.

I have always been a hat person. I was quite adventurous when I was younger, see the bonnet and bucket above, but these days I prefer something a little more fashion forward. This Philip Treacy inspired number with netting and feathers fits the bill perfectly!
I urge all you ladies and gentlemen out there to embrace all manner of hats this fall. Let's keep this trend going as long as we can!

Do you read Martha Stewart's Everyday Food magazine?

Personally, I love it. When I was younger, first starting to live on my own and learning to cook, this was my go to source. The recipes are easy, fast, and most importantly- seasonal. Plus, there is always a lovely accompanying photo to show you what your dish is supposed to look like!
I have bought a ton of these magazines over the years. When I am lacking inspiration in the kitchen, I will pull out all of the current month's issues from years past and go through them for ideas. Also, their diminutive size makes it perfect to throw one or two in my handbag on the way to the grocery store, that way I will know what ingredients to get. In short, they are kind of perfect.

Bay Area Eats

I had a super time last week on vacation in the bay area and I got to eat all the best foods!

1. Homeroom in Oakland- Perfect macaroni & cheese. I got the cacio e pepe with broccoli and it was so so good. Also, don't miss the homemade oreos.

2. The famous Tartine. Must haves include: jambon royale & gruyere sammie, croque monsieur, coconut cream tart, lemon bars, and well... basically everything on the menu. It's just as amazing as everyone says it is!

3. Miette. I have been wanting to visit this beautiful jewel box of a store for years and my dear friend Polly was lovely enough to indulge me and take me there. It's filled with candy, chocolate, cupcakes, a whole wall of licorice, and dreams. Corny I know but it's so adorable you will want to move in and live there forever.

4. We also went to a great German restaurant called Suppenkuche, but it was too dark to take pictures. It was the perfect spot for the newly cold nights and we had a delicious and cozy supper of braised meats, venison, dumplings, and hearty mugs of beer. A perfect introduction to fall.

Fall Nail Trends

Nail polish has come back in a big way this year and I am totally on board. I've been trying out tons of new colors, brands, and techniques and I'm ready to share my favorites for fall with you!

1. Matching your nail polish to your macaron. Expensive, time-consuming, and incredibly stylish!

2. Ah-maz-ing nail stickers from Nail Couture LA. Nail stickers are the way to go because they are so easy to apply and last much longer than polish does. I have been using the Sally Hansen brand a lot but these are a step up, design-wise.

3. A minimum of 2 colors on each nail. One allover color is for suckaz (unless, of course, you are matching it to a macaron). Check out this amazing color combination.

4. Barbra Streisand nails! Long length is back. Just watch this performance by Adele at the VMA's and try to deny it.

5. Painting one nail on each hand with matching glitter. This is so easy and it really makes an impact. As seen on Cupcakes & Cashmere.

End Of Summer

I guess it's kind of nearing the end of summer, as much as I don't want to admit it. It's almost dark by 7:30! Today marks 2 years since I packed up my van and moved from Portland to Los Angeles. I think I have to stop saying that I'm new here! A little bit ago I changed my status on here from "my new home of LA" to "my new-ish home of LA" but now it just kind of feels like home. Even though I still use my GPS anytime I go anywhere!

This week is going to be super fun. Tomorrow I hit the Missoni for Target collection first thing in the morning, then I jump on a plane for San Francisco to visit my friend Polly. I'm very excited to be doing a little traveling. A last summer hurrah if you will.

So posting will be sporadic for another week but I can't wait to greet the fall with open arms, share some yummy comfort dishes, new obsessions, and maybe even some fall makeup tips. I think this season is going to be a good one.

70's Needlepoint Craft Books!

I'm acquiring quite the little collection. The first one, "Needlepainting A Garden of Stitches" by Eszter Haraszty, I read about over on Cathy of California not too long ago and was hooked. Ebay had it for super cheap, so I snatched it up. It's so amazing and colorful, I truly think it would inspire anyone. I also love the way the book is written, Eszter tells you all about her life and how she created these patterns, and she's not afraid to talk about all her failures and difficulties. I felt like I was reading a book written by a good friend rather than some dry how-to manual. I am now an official fan and will be looking for more of her work.

Since I was on Ebay, I started looking around for Bargello needlepoint books (my latest obsession) and found "Free Form Bargello" by Gigs Stevens. It is also awesome and super super 70's in both design and tone. My favorite pattern is the one based around a shark jaw. So weird that I love it!

Today is my birthday. September 2nd. Having a birthday is great of course and I love it. I always take the day off and I have already received so many great gifts and I made reservations at a delicious new restaurant. But my birthday isn't just mine alone, my Dad and I have the same exact birthday.

My Dad passed away last December. It's been a really hard year, although I probably don't need to tell you that. It's been a lot of learning, a lot of crying and breakdowns. The strange thing is that I don't remember it very well. Normally I have an amazing memory but this year? Not so much. People keep telling me things over and over and I am still surprised to hear them. You wrote a book? That's amazing! Then I see the look of confusion on their face and I realize I already knew that. It's ok though, people are really nice and they understand for the most part. I'm calling it "My Year of Crazy" and I get to be as weird and sad as I want and no one can do anything about it.

So today, this is what I hope. I hope that I can enjoy my birthday and use it as a time to remember the good memories. For the rest of my life, I will share a birthday with my Dad, there will never be a year when it is my day alone and I don't want to be upset about it. I want to be happy about it. I am stating my intentions and expecting my brain to follow along in this plan. It might not be so easy this first year but with practice I think it will get better.

Rhubarb Compote

Mmmmm, rhubarb compote.

I have been craving some ever since I was served an adorable tiny pot of it a few weeks ago at brunch. They still had some rhubarb at Whole Foods so I bought it and got to work finding a recipe. The only problem was I couldn't find one I really liked. So I sort of cobbled them all together and just got to it.

First I chopped up all the rhubarb and added it to a pot over a low flame with some honey and lemon and sugar. Then I split a vanilla bean and added all the delicious vanilla bits. After it cooked down I let it stew away in the oven for a while at 300 degrees. After a taste it was still too sour, so I added more honey.

When it was cool I poured the compote into these adorable tiny Weck jars I got at Broome St. General Store. It's so yummy and I love eating it with yogurt in the morning, or on strawberry ice cream after dinner!

I have written about Living Proof products before, but I thought I should remind you, dear reader, about it again. So you can go buy some and they will never go out of business and I will be so very happy.

I don't really feel like going into great detail about each and every product, and you can read about it yourself here, let me just say that anyone who has any problems with frizzy hair in any capacity needs to get some of this and change your life. Somehow they use some kind of plastic and make it into hair products and it will probably end up giving you cancer or something but at least your hair is going to look SO GOOD! Go buy some right now! Coffee, Tea, Or Me?

I have to admit, I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I know, shocking. I mostly just drink it when I meet a friend for coffee. Usually I go the route of herbal tea and it's always mint. I'm kind of a creature of habit and I don't try new things that often when it comes to social non-alcoholic drinking. Which is weird because I am so up for trying new things when it comes to food or restaurants or whatever. Anyway.
The other day I was meeting a friend for coffee at Lamill but it was just so early and I could tell the coffee was going to give me a stomachache but I wanted a treat. I looked over the menu and decided to try the Vanilla Rooibos Milk Tea Latte and it was so so so yummy. I wanted to drink it every day. So I got home and researched a few recipes online (it turns out this drink is super popular at Starbucks too, who knew?) and decided to whip up my own delish version that doesn't cost me $5.25 every time I drink it.

After trying to be fancy and make this more complicated than it needs to be, I found the best way is to take a mug, fill half and half with milk and hot water and a rooibos tea bag and microwave for a minute, then add a dash of vanilla flavored syrup. Of course it's not quite as magical as the one at Lamill, which I think is made out of baby twin tears and stirred with a glittery unicorn horn, but it tastes quite yummy and makes me happy every morning!

Dahlias.

Another flower I used to hate, but now love. You are probably thinking- how can a person hate flowers? I'm not really sure but I think I was just a picky kid or something. I still hate geraniums, not only do I think they are ugly but the smell makes me want to punch someone in the face. Seriously.

On a lighter note, if you are ever in the Portland, Oregon area in August, you should check out the Swan Island Dahlia Farm- just acres and acres of beautiful flowers. I could wander around there for about 5 hours just taking pictures and marveling at nature.

The Jerk

Remember my list of summer goals? Well, I finally checked another one off the ol' list. On Saturday night I went to see the delightful Steve Martin comedy "The Jerk" at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Normally I am scared of cemeteries and I think they are creepy but it was really lovely. I kept looking up at the towering palm trees and feeling the warm night breeze and just being in love with LA.
One small word of advice though- be sure to plan parking in advance, like buy a parking pass because you are screwed if you don't. There are thousands of people trying to get into this one place so get there super early, just plan on devoting hours of your life to this thing and being ok with it. Food and alcohol are allowed so bring a picnic and blanket and settle in for some good times!

Just when I think that I have seen the best that Zara can do, they blow my mind again! I am loving all of the new designs for this season, especially the dresses.

This dress is basically the F/W 2011 version of the look I have worn every fall for the past 10 years or so- the simple black boat neck three quarter sleeve day dress. Me likey.

Paint Chip Art

I saw this paint chip craft tutorial over on How About Orange, one of my fav crafty blogs, and I was instantly smitten. It took me a few weeks, but I finally stopped by Home Depot yesterday to relieve them of some paint chips (I also bought two plants to feel less guilty!) and we were in business. I decided to go with a coral/orange/gray theme. First, you make a triangle template from some cardboard, then trace it onto the paint chips and cut them out. This part took forever and made me bored and angry at the same time! A break and eating frosting from a can were required.

Then I started arranging the triangles into a pattern. I didn't like the first one I made so I started over and loved it the second time around.

On to the next step!

I grabbed some glue and a paint sponge and started gluing the triangles down onto another piece of cardboard. Then I let dry for an hour or so while I watched old episodes of Parks & Recreation. Yes, again.

I trimmed the edges and put into this adorable bamboo frame I picked up at the thrifts*. I love it!

*I tend to buy any frame I like at thrift stores, even if I don't have an immediate use for it, I will use it at some point.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Rather than going off to work last Sunday like I always do, I had a delicious pre-birthday brunch at the Roosevelt Hotel (aka The Roozy) with Lauren. We consumed between 40-50 bellinis and the rhubarb compote was off the hook. There is nothing I love more than fancy meals and pretending I'm rich...sigh.

Tomato & Cheddar Pie

Oh yum. I got the recipe from the newest Bon Appetit and I think you should probably make it. It's pretty easy and comes together quite fast once you chill the dough and drain the tomatoes.

The crust is very biscuity and delicious, the tomatoes and cheddar are lovely together, and the dill really makes this dish. Next time I am going to add corn or maybe bacon too!

The Fall

This is the first, and possibly only, prediction I am going to make in the beauty/fashion arena as far as the upcoming fall season is concerned. For whatever reason, I could not seem to form one idea or opinion as to what the trends next season were going to be. I haven't seen the fall Vogue yet, I thought, as soon as I see that I will totally know! I kept asking people-"What do you think will be in this fall?" and they kept saying "I don't know". I felt suspicious and angry, like they were holding out on me.

I was at the drugstore the other day and instantly felt drawn to this almost ugly, very orange-y deep copper nail polish and it suddenly clicked: this was going to be so in this fall. So I bought it. Mission accomplished!

Oh also- Navy is going to be HUGE.

Peach Elderflower Yogurt Pop

I was looking over my summer to do list the other day, since it's August and all, and I realized I hadn't done much besides take pictures and wear sunscreen. So I decided to make popsicles- goal #4. I've been wanting to make these Campari Orange pops, but I didn't feel like going to the store to buy things. So I made one up- it's officially titled the "Peach Elderflower Yogurt Pop" and it's freakin' amazing.

Ingredients

3 Peaches

1/4 Cup Sugar

1 Tbsp Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

1 Tbsp St. Germain Liqueur

Pinch of Salt

17 oz. Greek Yogurt (I used Fage 2%)

Directions

Peel peaches and cut into sections. Transfer peaches to saucepan and add next 4 ingredients (don't add yogurt!). Bring to a boil over medium heat, then lower heat to a simmer until mixture has thickened. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Add a few spoonfuls of syrup from peaches to yogurt and mix well. Then alternate layers of yogurt and peaches in popsicle molds, or if you prefer, mix yogurt and peaches together before freezing in molds.

Freeze overnight and enjoy the deliciousness!

Downton Abbey

I am completely obsessed.

I had a very trying week so today I decided to take it easy, lounge around, take care of myself and watch Downton Abbey- for the third time. It's so comforting to watch, it always makes me feel better. The show centers around a wealthy family living in England in 1912, trying in vain to save their home and inheritance. The first season is available (streaming on Netflix-squee!) and the second season comes out in England on September 18th, and here in the States on January 8th. I'm sure with all the technology out there I won't have any problem watching it as soon as possible. Waiting until January just isn't going to work for me!

Grilled romaine with blue cheese dressing and steaks!

It was all delicious, including the steak marinade which was garlic, cilantro, lime, brown sugar, and olive oil. But the lettuce didn't taste any different, maybe I needed to grill it more? Next time I'll get it real crispy!

I don't have a recipe for the marinade, I just kind of eyeballed it and it was super yummy.

I find that I'm becoming more relaxed with cooking, trusting myself to guess at quantities of things. This is good and maybe shows that I'm learning to chill a little bit in my old age?

As I was walking through a store the other day these large glass jars caught my eye, and I realized I had been meaning to buy some to store foodstuffs in for about 12 years. All of a sudden I got quite angry that it had taken me so long and bought a bunch of them in an effort to become more organized.

I'm so happy I did, I love looking at flour and sugar in these much more than a boring old paper bag!

Elderflower

My obsession with Elderflower continues!

First it was St. Germain liqueur, it's delicious with champagne or in a gin & tonic.

Now it's Belvoir Farms Elderflower Presse, a "natural soda" made with elderflowers, lemon, and sparkling water. It tastes refreshing and delightful, and a little bit floral- perfect for summer. I love it!

Favorite Vinaigrette

This is my very favorite salad vinaigrette. The recipe is from The Barefoot Contessa and yes, it has a raw egg in it. If you are worried about it just use a organic farm fresh egg or omit it. Personally, I think it adds such a creamy consistency to this dressing that I can't imagine the recipe without it!

1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 egg yolk, at room temp

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

3 tablespoons champagne or white wine vinegar

salt & pepper to taste

1/2 cup olive oil

Whisk together first 5 ingredients, then slowly whisk in olive oil until emulsified.

Sometimes I like to add a little lemon too, if I'm feeling saucy!

Sweet & Salty

I just cannot get enough of sweet & salty combos lately!

I had a delicious sundae once that was a fancy take on an Almond Joy, they topped it off with salted Marcona almonds and it was like, my favorite thing ever.

Last night while I was having my usual evening sweet tooth attack, I decided to make my own version using vanilla bean ice cream, dulce de leche, and salted Marcona almonds. Then I sprinkled a little more salt over the top just to make sure it was perfect. It was sooooo good. I highly recommend you make this immediately!

My visiting friend Polly brought me this lovely gift from The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California. It was so pink and so beautifully wrapped that I wanted to share it with you!

I've never been to The Madonna Inn but I feel like I have. Polly has told me so many tales over the years and I've seen so many photos and talked about it so much that I feel a special connection to the place.

This gorgeous milk glass goblet is exactly what you would drink out of at The Inn if you were lucky enough to stay there. I collect milk glass objects so this was the perfect gift for me!

Renegade Craft Fair - Los Angeles

I finally made it to the Renegade Craft Fair this year, and it was excellent!

I was expecting a lot of great stuff and people, but it was even more amazing than I could have predicted. I just kept walking and walking and looking at beautiful and creative things. I definitely left feeling inspired. Here are some of the things I saw, ate, & bought!

There were some great food trucks at the fair but I had to go for the one I had heard so much about- the fried chicken Ludo Truck. It was flavorful, super crunchy, and I am still craving more today! Read more about the crazy 3 day process that it takes to make this chicken here.

My first purchase was this amazing bright orange cat/mouse print from Strawberry Luna.

Then I got my very own copy of Vintage Craft Workshop, signed by Cathy of California herself!

I indulged in a little bit of therapy this past weekend, of the retail variety.

I'm trying out a new walking/work out regimen and this water bottle was my reward. Plus it's my 3 favorite colors- orange, teal, and stripe (yes, stripe is a color!).

I was SO excited when I saw this shop was going to open up directly next door to where I work.

Today I tried the salted caramel, pistachio, and raspberry flavors. They were all exceptional, but my heart will always and forevermore belong to salted caramel.

Butcher Paper Birthday

Recently I had a birthday present to wrap and no time to drive to a fancy card store and spend lots of money on something. So I stopped by my local dollar store and picked up some butcher paper and this 80's-esque, slightly hipster rainbow ribbon. I like the way it turned out, it's simple but fun!

Another thing I love to do (when I have more time) is take a potato, cut it in half, carve out a design or a person's initials, and then dip in paint and stamp it all over plain paper to make my own homemade wrapping paper. Personalization shows you care!

Parfum Sacre by Caron

Have you ever been to The Perfume House in Portland, Oregon?

It's a unique experience. The fact that The Perfume House even exists there is pretty amazing. Portlanders are not known for their style and fragrance, unless you are talking about Gore Tex and patchouli. I'm not trying to be rude but that's just the way it goes. Also, The Perfume House is located on Hawthorne Boulevard which is known for being a "hippie" part of town, and it's in this old brown house which has been converted into an amazing perfume shop.

I first went there years ago with my bestie Lauren and we had an amazing time. The owner Chris was in for the day, he's a wonderful old world European gentleman and this guy is the best salesperson I have ever come across. You don't even realize what he's doing to you, he sits you down and tells you some amazing story and the next thing you know, you buy everything in sight. We talk about Chris all the time and when we go back we are disappointed if he isn't there. Every time we visit we learn something new, and one time Chris sold us on this wonderful rigamarole about day and evening scents. Day scents are made with flowers that bloom during the day, are only worn during the day and you can have as many as you want, switching back and forth. Evening scents are special. You only have one, and it is your signature fragrance. It is made from night blooming flowers and it is a very personal thing, what you are known for. Of course I became obsessed, and it took me a couple of years but I found it (at The Perfume House of course) and it is Parfum Sacre by Caron. This is what Chris told me- it takes 117 minutes to develop on your arm and it's true, it smells weird and old lady at first but after it develops, it's the yummiest thing ever- spicy and powdery. I use it sparingly, only for very special occasions, which is silly because it's supposed to be my signature.

You have to check out this review on a great perfume blog, Now Smell This, and you will see that I am not exaggerating about this place! If you are ever in Portland, do stop by and allow yourself to indulge in the wonderful world that is fine fragrance.

Holiday Weekend

So, it's a holiday weekend. 4th of July.

Full disclosure: I hate the 4th of July. It's so LOUD. I hate that people set off pointless fireworks for hours and it makes so much noise and it gets all the dogs barking and it upsets my cat. And me.

Did I mention what an old stick in the mud I can be sometimes? Haha.

Anyway, maybe you Los Angeles natives out there can give me some tips for fun things to do for the 4th. What have you done in the past that you loved? What are the best places to watch fireworks? Maybe I can join in the spirit this year instead of holing up in my house getting angrier and angrier by the minute as everyone else in the world has a great time? A girl can dream!

What Are You Reading?

I got a bunch of great books at the thrifts lately and in a fit of crazy, started reading all of them at the same time. I go from Kansas in the 60's in "In Cold Blood" to Detroit in the 70's in "The Virgin Suicides", then jump around to M.F.K. Fisher and Joan Didion. If I'm feeling girly I dip into Bergdorf Blondes for my fix of the gossipy New York fashion world.

On another note, remember how important libraries were when you were a kid? It was my only source of entertainment and I loved going there. I hardly ever go as an adult. My friend Polly recently participated in a live reading in an attempt to stop the city of Oakland from shutting down 10 of their 14 library branches. It got me thinking about things, read more about it here.

Broome St. General Store

Love, love, love. I'm in love with Broome St. General Store!

Cutest place ever. They have coffee (Gimme! Coffee) and goodies to eat but then the rest of the place is a wonderfully curated shop. Foodstuffs, thermoses, light bulbs, glassware, dishes, fancy bloody mary mix, Bob's Red Mill products (including gluten-free mixes!), my fav corn chips, Weck jars, and even plastic banana holders. I wanted to buy everything in sight! All of my future meetings, chats, hang-outs, etc. will be held here. I had wonderful company today in the form of lovely Lauren.

I bought some Fleur de Sel and plan to make all sorts of yummy caramel desserts with it.

500 Posts!!!

If you had told me in my younger days that I would have written 500 paragraphs or so about things that I like I would have laughed for hours! For some reason whenever I try to write I get all freaked out and can't handle it but blogging is perfect for me, it's easy to just write a little bit here and there about things I know. And since I never thought anyone would really read this, there wasn't any fear involved. Well here we are years later, lots of people I don't know read this (thanks everyone!), and it has given me confidence to keep writing and trying new things in every aspect of my life. Yay for blogging!

Terrariums

I have been trying to make some terrariums lately for my space but with mixed results. I don't think I'm particularly good at designing them. I even threw a "terrarium making party" and even though I had a great time, I wasn't super pleased with how mine turned out. Have I mentioned that I'm a perfectionist Virgo and don't even want to try and do something if I don't think it will be perfect?

Anyway, I made another last night and liked it a little more but am still not completely happy! I think I need to find a much larger container and look at some photos online of terrariums I like. Eventually I'll get there, with some help and inspiration.
